This week, Lemhi County Humane Society joined animal welfare organizations from across the region to assist with a large-scale dog rescue effort involving 38 animals living in a hoarding situation in Fernwood, Idaho.

The conditions were heartbreaking.

The dogs had been living in extremely unsanitary conditions. Several deceased animals were recovered from the property and found in kennels with living animals. LCHS joined teams from Idaho Animal Rescue Network, Horse & Halo, Idaho Humane Society, SpokAnimal C.A.R.E., and students from the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine to assess the animals and get them to safety.

LCHS brought five of these dogs back to Salmon.

A Dog Rescue Effort That Spanned Multiple Organizations

As difficult as situations like this are to witness, this is exactly why we do the work we do.

When animals are neglected, abandoned, injured, or simply have nowhere else to go, shelters and rescue organizations step in. We provide a safe place, medical care, and the opportunity for a fresh start. Every animal deserves that chance.

This rescue effort brought together animal welfare professionals, veterinarians, students, and volunteers from across the region with one shared goal: getting these dogs to safety and helping them begin a new chapter.

What Happens After a Dog Rescue?

For these five dogs, the journey is just beginning.

Before they can be adopted, they will need vaccinations, spay or neuter surgeries, medical evaluations, parasite treatment, grooming, nutritious food, and plenty of time to decompress and learn that people can be trusted again. Some may require additional veterinary care depending on what we discover in the coming weeks.

Medical Care Comes First

Every dog that enters LCHS receives individualized care based on their needs. For these rescue dogs, that may include:

  • Veterinary exams
  • Vaccinations
  • Spay or neuter surgery
  • Parasite treatment
  • Grooming and cleaning
  • Behavioral assessment and socialization
  • Ongoing medical treatment if needed

Only after they are healthy and ready will they be available for adoption.

The Real Cost of Animal Rescue

Many people see the happy ending when a dog finds a forever home. What they don’t always see are the resources required to get an animal to that point.

Rescues like this come with significant behind-the-scenes costs. Staff members spent a full day traveling to assist with the effort and transport the dogs safely back to Salmon. Fuel, vehicle expenses, shelter supplies, medical care, and staff time all add up quickly.

Community Support Makes Rescue Possible

These costs are just a reality of animal rescue work. The good news is that no shelter does this work alone.

Every donation, every volunteer hour, every adoption, and every share of a social media post helps make rescues like this possible. Community support allows Lemhi County Humane Society to say “yes” when animals need help most.

Help Support These Dogs’ Recovery

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing updates as these dogs settle in and begin their recovery. We can’t wait for the day we introduce them as adoptable pets instead of rescue cases.

If you’d like to help support their care, donations can be made online or at the shelter. When you make a donation, you become a Friend of the Shelter and your generosity helps provide the medical treatment, food, shelter, and second chances that make stories like this possible.

Thank you for helping us be there when animals need us most.
