50 Years in Lemhi County

At Lemhi County Humane Society, everything we do begins with a love for animals. But the impact of our work reaches far beyond the shelter walls.
Next year will be LCHS’s 50th anniversary. Since our founding, we have been here for the animals of Lemhi County, and for the people who love them.
As we head into the final day of Idaho Gives, we want to share what our impact truly looks like and how you can be part of it.
Preventing Suffering Before It Starts
One of the most important ways we serve our community is through spay and neuter support.
Last year alone:
- We spent over $5,000 on spay and neuter coupons to help pet owners afford care
- We invested more than $7,000 in community and feral cat sterilization through TNR
- We spent over $15,000 ensuring every shelter animal was spayed or neutered before adoption
These numbers represent more than dollars; they represent prevention.

When animals are spayed and neutered, we reduce unwanted litters, ease the strain on families and shelters, and create healthier, more stable animal populations across Lemhi County.
Through programs like Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR), we are addressing the root of the problem, not just the symptoms. We are humanely stabilizing outdoor cat populations and preventing suffering before it begins.
A gift during Idaho Gives helps fund this critical work.
A Safe Place When It Matters Most
Another service we provide the community is helping lost animals find their way back home.
Through our agreement with the City of Salmon, we help reunite lost pets with their families, providing a safe, caring space while owners are found. We also offer $20 microchips to make it easier and faster to find the homes of lost pets. Last year, we helped reunite 57 animals with their owners, and so far this year, we have helped 13 animals reunite with their owners.
We know accidents happen. Gates get left open. Dogs slip collars. Cats wander farther than expected.
When they do, we’re here.
Every reunion is a moment of relief for both the animal and the person waiting for them at home.
Your support during Idaho Gives helps ensure we’re always ready when those moments happen.
Keeping Pets in Loving Homes
Sometimes, helping animals means helping people first. Our community pet food pantry exists to support community members who need a little extra help caring for their animals.

Last year, we distributed over 900 pounds of pet food to families in need. This year, we’ve already surpassed 1,500 pounds, thanks in part to a generous donation from Tractor Supply Company.
Our pet food pantry keeps food in bowls, alleviates stress during tight times, and helps keep pets in loving homes, even when times are tough.
We believe that when people are supported, animals are too.
Donating during Idaho Gives helps us keep this pantry stocked and accessible.
A Store That Supports So Much More

Many people know Rags & Wags as a great place to find affordable clothing, furniture, and treasures, but it’s also so much more than a thrift store. It is our primary funding source, making nearly everything we do possible.
And it’s also a community resource in its own right:
- Providing affordable goods to families
- Donating items to other nonprofits
- Supporting individuals facing hardship as they get back on their feet
Rags & Wags is a reflection of this community: neighbors helping neighbors, in ways both big and small.
This Is What Community Looks Like
Idaho Gives is a celebration of exactly this kind of impact: people coming together to support the causes they care about. At Lemhi County Humane Society, we strive every day to be more than just a nonprofit. We are neighbors, community partners, and animal lovers who actively look for ways to engage with our community.
To our donors, followers, adopters, and volunteers – thank you. We wouldn’t be able to continue doing the lifesaving work we do without the help and support of this community.
Make your Idaho Gives gift today and be part of the community that makes all of this possible.
Every donation helps. Every action matters. And every person who shows up for this work becomes part of something bigger.
Together, we are creating a safer, healthier, more compassionate Lemhi County, for animals and for the people who love them.
Join Us For Idaho Gives Pint Night
To celebrate the final day of Idaho Gives, we are having a Pint Night at Highlander Beer. Meet adoptable dogs on the patio, enter the raffle for a chance to win great prizes, and have a beer knowing that $1 from each pint sold will come to LCHS during the event.
