As of this morning, Gumbo officially weighs 1.83 lbs. He’s steadily gaining, with a big milestone ahead. Once he reaches 3 lbs, he can receive his rabies vaccine, get neutered, and begin the search for his forever home.
From Homeless to Hopeful
Gumbo came to LCHS from a local community cat colony. When volunteers found him and his mother, both were sick, and she had begun to turn away from caring for him. On their own, Gumbo likely wouldn’t have survived.
We brought them both in, providing medical care for mom and stepping in to raise Gumbo. From the moment he could wiggle around, he’s been a tiny sparkplug with a big personality (and possibly the most photogenic kitten in the world).
Every year, LCHS helps many kittens like Gumbo who are lost, abandoned, or in need of care. Today, he’s thriving in a foster home: healthy, happy, and gaining strength every day.
The Impact of Fostering
Fostering is one of the most impactful ways we care for vulnerable animals. For kittens and puppies, it can be the difference between life and death. For older animals, it can mean less time in the shelter and a better chance at finding a home. Foster homes allow animals to decompress, build confidence, and show their true personalities.
But fostering also comes with real costs. LCHS provides everything our foster volunteers need: formula, food, medications, blankets, toys, and more. On average, it costs well over $700 to care for a single kitten like Gumbo. Last year alone, LCHS helped over 150 kittens.
