Since 1977
Lemhi County Humane Society owns & operates the Salmon Animal Shelter and Rags & Wags Thrift Store.
SAS provides high-quality sheltering services for the homeless pets of Lemhi County.
We also provide funds for public spay and neuter programs in an attempt to decrease the number of dogs and cats entering our shelter. We serve as a line of defense against animal abuse & neglect, working closely with law enforcement officials, to ensure that all animals in Lemhi County are treated in a kind and humane manner.
Humane Society Hours:
11 am – 5 pm every day of the week
Rags & Wags Thrift Store Hours:
Monday – Friday: 8 am – 6 pm
Saturday: 9 am – 6 pm

🎶🐾 It’s almost time to Boogie! 🐾🎶

We started the day with pasta on the brain... 🍝🐾
We heard it was National Pasta Day, and we were all set to make a fun, cute post comparing our animals to different kinds of noodles—because let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a wiggly puppy that looks like spaghetti?
But like most days in rescue, things quickly shifted. Our day filled up fast with the real, often heavy work of caring for animals in need.
Right now, we have 18 dogs in our care and over 60 cats and kittens still waiting for forever homes. That number weighs on us.
This little pup came in recently—his "before" photo shows him in an outside kennel, scared and unsure. The second photo? Taken just one day later, after some love, food, and safety. You can already see a bit of the light coming back into his eyes. That’s what keeps us going.
We know there’s a stigma around shelters. But here at the Lemhi County Humane Society, we are often the first loving hand an animal ever knows. We are tired. Our hearts may be shrinking under the weight—but they’re still beating strong for the animals.
To our staff, volunteers, adopters, and this incredible community: thank you. Thank you for trusting us with the homeless animals of Lemhi County. Thank you for reminding us why we do this, even when we’re running on empty.
We may be weary, but we will never falter.
