At Lemhi County Humane Society, there is something that unites all of our staff, volunteers, board members, and donors: a love for animals.
Being a Friend of the Shelter means being part of a community that believes all animals deserve safety, dignity, and love. This shared love for animals drives our work, and seeing the impact this community makes in Lemhi County is inspiring.
A Story that Stays with Us
Sometimes, we are fortunate enough to receive updates on how our former shelter animals are doing. This spring, we received a lovely letter, the kind that keeps us connected to the work we do here.
Stories like these keep us focused on what matters. This year, during Idaho Gives, we hope you’ll join us as a Friend of the Shelter to help support the important work our team does, ensuring that every animal has a warm bed, a bowl of food, and a shot at a second chance.
We hope you enjoy this update from the Barker Family.
Our Adoption Story: From Sandy & Gary Barker
On August 23, 2020, in the midst of COVID, we drove from Helena, Montana, to Salmon, Idaho to adopt November Rose. She was between two and three-years old. She was everything we were hoping for and we did not hesitate to adopt her.

She adapted to her new home easily. She liked everyone, although she seemed to miss the company of other cats. In the shelter, I noticed she seemed to have a connection to a young black and white kitten named Bolin. My first reaction was to adopt both of them, but I thought my husband, Gary, would object. When he noticed Rosie’s loneliness, he agreed to drive back several days later and adopt Bolin, too.
The two of them are inseparable. I think it is a great thing for cats to have a companion they love. During the COVID time, we certainly enjoyed having them as our companions! Rosie likes flowers and snacks. Bo likes toys and watching squirrels and birds from the windows. Because we live near Mount Helena and mountain lions, they became indoor cats unless we go outdoors with them.
Cats are amazingly loyal, intuitive, and read human emotions and pain. I have a rare disease which makes it very difficult for me to swallow my food… Bo lays his head on my foot when I eat breakfast and remains there until I finish! Our daughter is non weight bearing currently due to a fractured tibia. Her cat, Otis, sleeps at her feet too!
Thank you,
Sandy & Gary Barker

Your Donation Helps Cats Like Rosie and Bo Find Families Like the Barkers
When you give during Idaho Gives, you’re helping create second chances for cats like Rosie and Bo.
These two found their perfect home together, but many others are still waiting. Your support helps us provide the care, time, and attention they need while they find the right match.
Every donation brings us one step closer to more stories like this one.
Why We Recommend Adopting Two Kittens
Despite their reputation for independence, most cats (especially kittens) thrive with companionship.
When kittens are adopted together, they learn from each other, burn off energy through play, and grow into more confident, well-adjusted cats. They keep each other company while you’re away and often make the transition into a new home easier for everyone.
As the Barker family discovered, sometimes that bond is already there: two animals who have chosen each other, just waiting for someone to say yes to both.
Upcoming Events for Cat Lovers!
There are several upcoming opportunities to meet adoptable cats and support their care during Idaho Gives and beyond:
Pint Night for Idaho Gives (May 7, 5-8 PM at Highlander Beer): Grab a pint, meet some adoptable animals, and support LCHS during the last day of Idaho Gives! $1 from every pint sold will be donated to the shelter.
Empty the Shelters (May 11-17): Thanks to BISSELL Pet Foundation, we’re able to offer reduced-fee adoptions for cats and kittens. It’s the perfect time to welcome one (or two) into your home.
Kitten Yoga (May 16, 10-11 AM at Oddfellow Hall): Start your morning with a little movement and a lot of cuteness. Join us for yoga surrounded by playful kittens.
Save the Date for Barn Cat Boogie (September 10 at Sweetwater): Our biggest fundraiser of the year, supporting TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) efforts and ongoing cat care in our community.
Whether you adopt, attend an event, or make a gift during Idaho Gives, you are part of these stories. You are part of the reason animals like Rosie and Bo find not just a home, but a companion, comfort, and a life filled with love.
